WW2 United States The World War II booklet “Welcome to the Riviera”

$11.99

The World War II booklet “Welcome to the Riviera” features a colorful seaside illustration on its cover depicting a soldier and a modern young woman. On the back cover, the USRRA emblem conceals a little-known historical detail.

After the liberation of southern France in 1944, the United States created an exclusive “vacation paradise” in Nice for its troops in Europe—the USRRA (United States Riviera Recreation Area). This was a rest-and-recuperation zone established by the U.S. Sixth Army Group specifically for soldiers who had endured intense combat. Certain areas were even marked “Off Limits to Officers,” emphasizing relaxation, freedom, and dignity for ordinary enlisted men.

✨ The benefits offered there were truly astonishing for the time:

  • ✔️ Luxury villas and hotels provided free of charge, centrally allocated by military units

  • ✔️ International-style dining halls with free alcoholic beverages

  • ✔️ Golf, water sports, and other recreational activities all free of charge, with French seaside cuisine available at very low prices

  • ✔️ All-night movies, jazz performances, and nonstop parties, with local civilians welcome to join

  • ✔️ Free postal services, medical and psychological counseling, and affordable souvenir shops, all conveniently available

The booklet itself is just a little over 20 pages, yet it contains more than a dozen pen-and-ink sketches of leisure scenes, filled with a relaxed and romantic atmosphere. The original owner even made handwritten notes inside—perhaps traces of a date with someone special. The booklet concludes with a USRRA map, clearly marking hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making it extremely practical.

This chapter of history truly challenges common perceptions. We often remember World War II only for its artillery fire and sacrifice, yet rarely consider the enormous investment the U.S. military made in logistical support and soldier welfare. Rather than focusing solely on endurance and sacrifice, the system integrated human value and morale into military planning. This was not merely a benefit program, but a major shift in strategic thinking. Today, this booklet has become a rare historical artifact and collectible, quietly telling a story of warmth and humanity amid the flames of war.
